Supporting smoking and vaping cessation through incentive-based approaches within healthcare systems

Led by: Preventive Health SA
Partner: Houd Research Group, Northern Adelaide Local Health Network
Theme: Tobacco Control

📌 Overview

The Incentive to Quit (I2Q) pilot program tests a financial incentive model to encourage smoking and vaping cessation among vulnerable groups with high prevalence rates. Participants receive supermarket vouchers for achieving milestones such as verified abstinence or engagement with cessation services.

Alongside participant incentives, the program supports clinicians with training, resources, and systems to integrate brief intervention and digital registration into routine healthcare practice.

📈 Impacts

  • Recruited 434 clients and achieved a 33.6% validated quit rate within two years.
  • Trained 336 health professionals to deliver cessation advice and support.
  • Demonstrated feasibility of incentive-based quitting support within existing healthcare systems.

💡 Why It Works

  • Simple and engaging model: Tangible rewards motivate and sustain quit attempts.
  • Clinician co-design: Practical integration with existing workflows increases program adoption.
  • Multi-strategy approach: Combines behavioral incentives with professional training and support systems.

Together, these approaches demonstrate how investing in physical literacy from early childhood can lay the foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity through education systems.
