Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction
On World No Tobacco Day 2026, the International Network of Health Promotion Foundations (INHPF) issues a joint statement calling for stronger, coordinated action to address the growing harms of tobacco and nicotine products.
As tobacco and nicotine industries continue to evolve their tactics through digital platforms, appealing product designs, and youth-targeted marketing, INHPF urges governments and stakeholders to strengthen evidence-based policies that protect children, adolescents, and vulnerable communities from nicotine addiction and industry influence.
Key Messages
- Young people are increasingly exposed to e-cigarettes and other nicotine products through digital marketing and online platforms
- The rapid expansion of emerging nicotine products continues to affect both public health and the environment
- Stronger implementation of WHO FCTC Article 5.3 is essential to protect public health policies from industry interference
- Sustainable investment in health promotion and prevention remains critical to protecting future generations
Our Call to Action
INHPF calls on governments, policymakers, and stakeholders to:
- Reduce access to e-cigarettes and emerging nicotine products
- Implement comprehensive marketing regulations across digital and retail environments
- Strengthen enforcement frameworks to address illicit supply and support cessation efforts
- Strengthen safeguards against tobacco industry interference
- Advance integrated prevention and health literacy across education, health, and community systems
- Invest in sustainable community-led health promotion and evidence-based support for cessation and prevention
